Which, to us, makes pretty good sense really.

Public Health England, an organisation to advises policymakers on English public health (would you believe it), is proposing to ban idling vehicles within school zones, in a bid to improve public health and cut down on air pollution. This was brought about in their latest report that has also highlighted some other proposals it has in mind.

The PHE suggest that as many as 36,000 people a year die from issues related to air pollution. As a result, they reckon that school zones should be designated as no-idling areas, to cut down on the number of people who leave their cars running while waiting to pick up their kids.

In addition to this, PHE would like different municipalities to implement no-idling zones elsewhere, like around hospitals and aged-care homes.

“Transport & urban planners will need to work together with others involved in air pollution to ensure that new initiatives have a positive impact. Decision makers should carefully design policies to make sure that the poorest in society are protected against the financial implications of new schemes.” – Prof. Paul Cosford, Medical Director, Public Health England

The PHE has also recommended that cities are redesigned to put greater physical distance between homes & roads, perhaps with wider streets or with hedges to green against pollutants, as well as more readily-available public charging ports to facilitate wider low-emissions areas in city centres.
