Not just a swoopy roofline here.
French carmaker Renault has begun teasing its new Captur Coupe, which isn’t as straightforward as you might think it is. Set for a debut at the Moscow Motor Show (yes, they too have a motor show), the Captur Coupe will indeed be an alternative-bodystyle proposition as its name suggests, but there’s more in it than that.
In Russia, the Captur is not only spelt with a ‘K’ (so that’s ‘Kaptur’), but it’s also a different car. It looks the same, but it sits on a different platform that makes it longer and wider, and employs different powertrains. As a result, the Kaptur is actually a size bigger than the Captur we’re familiar with, and so the Kapture Coupe will be based off that.
Further, because of its Slavic roots, it’s unlikely that the Cap— sorry, Kapture Coupe will see the light of day in in markets outside of Russia and China. However, it is possible that if the model proves successful and desirable enough, Renault could consider opening up availability in other countries (like what happened to Mazda with the CX-8).
A sole shadowy image of the Kaptur Coupe has been released by the French firm, teasing what they say is a show car that will faithfully preview the production model. What’s clear to see is that the very face of the car has been updated to reflect the more style-focused nature of the Coupe, bearing more styling influence from the new Megane rather than the Captur that we might be familiar with.
When it arrives (with a different name, we’re informed), the Captur Coupe will be built at Renault’s plant in Moscow and be made available in the Russian market first, before eventually finding its way to China and other select markets worldwide. Don’t hold your breath, is all we have to say.
