Ford Performance has finally revealed specifications for the 6.2-litre supercharged V8 engine that will power the range-topping Mustang. As you’ve no doubt read in the headline, the motor produces 567kW and 860Nm, giving the pony car the kind of grunt that it, frankly, deserves.
No specific details are provided, we’re afraid, as the American automaker has again chosen to keep the bulk of the car’s mechanicals a secret until the GT500’s launch day, presumably. Rather than it being a point-and-squirt American muscle car like its predecessor, this 6th-generation version was engineered from the start to be a much more precise machine.
Think of it as a GT350 - itself something of a track toy - but with a whopping supercharged V8 under the bonnet, massive aero, and the title of the most powerful road-going Ford ever produced. That’s quite a trio of bragging points.
More on that engine, that being a 5.2-litre 90-degree V8. It’s related to the Voodoo mill in the aforementioned GT350, but now lacks the flat-plane crank that gave it such a unique soundtrack. It should still sound mega regardless, though. We’re hoping Ford Performance has somehow tuned the supercharger whine to make up for this, though, but we’re not holding our breaths.
Power is sent to the a pair of fat rear wheels through 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that we suspect is also shared with the GT supercar. The Getrag shifter is pretty slick, but we would expect some sighs from some enthusiasts that insist a car like this is supplied with 3 pedals.
Until Ford decides to publish more stats, we can only guess at the GT500’s ferocity off the line. Though, expect acceleration times from a standstill to hover around the 3 second mark. To compensate, the automaker did say that it can run the quarter mile below 11 seconds and has a top speed that’s electronically limited to 180mph or 290km/h.
