The evolution of Mercedes-Benz’ innovative smart brand continues at the Geneva Motor Show with the unveiling of the smart forspeed – an electric-powered, two-seater, open-top roadster. smart’s newcomer is an advance on its escooter and ebike studies shown at the Paris Motor Show.
With no roof or side windows, the smart forspeed features a low wind deflector instead of a conventional windscreen – reminiscent of classic propeller-driven aircraft. A ute-style tonneau cover provides weather protection (including a zip-out section for the driver) however inside, the smart forspeed has been designed for all-weather use with an ingenious draining system and extensive weather-proof coatings.
“The smart forspeed is a completely new take on how much fun it is to drive electric,” explained Dr. Annette Winkler, Head of smart.
The smart forspeed is driven by a 30kW magneto-electric motor with a lithium-ion battery. The two-seater has a top speed of 120km/h and accelerates from zero to 100km/h in just 5.5-seconds.
New for the forspeed is a center console button which delivers an extra 5kW of power for short times to deliver extra overtaking acceleration.
A full charged battery will give the smart forspeed a driving range of about 135 kilometres and its charging device (cleverly tucked behind the third brake light) plugs into a conventional 220V socket. Photovoltaic cells in the wind deflector collecting solar power provide power for the onboard electrics system (smartphone etc).
