BMW isn’t an automaker to have ever shied away from product placement deals with Hollywood (the 1990s James Bond movies, Ronin, The Transporter), and the latest tie up revolves around the Tom Cruise action franchise, Mission: Impossible.
For the newest addition to the series, called Fallout, BMW has again scored a high profile role alongside its high profile actors: this time the car in question is a black F90 M5. To celebrate its coveted cameo, the automaker is preparing a limited run of special edition units. The bad news, which is also quite curious, is that they’re relegated to the Japanese market only.
The M5 Mission: Impossible Edition is, obviously, is made to replicate the car used in the movie with its exterior finished in Singapore Grey with a gloss black trim given to its kidney grilles and mirror caps. There’s also new Y-spoke wheels and an M Sport exhaust system to top off the list of upgrades.
However, BMW is also offering the spy treatment to certain variants of the standard 5 Series as well: 523i, 523d, 530i, 523i Touring, 523d Touring, 530i Touring. Over their usual appointments, the Mission: Impossible Edition brings a Sapphire Black exterior with gloss accents, blacked out double-spoke wheels, a unique door sill plate exclusive to the run, and a 16-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo.
Being the 6th instalment of the movie franchise, it returns with all the usual ingredients for a high octane thrill ride of espionage and fist fights, helmed again by Christopher McQuarrie. BMW’s involvement with the series will not be the marque’s first either, as their Vision EfficientDynamics Concept (progenitor to the i8) made its onscreen debut in ‘Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol’ back in 2011.
Following that, an F80 BMW M3 featured heavily in the 2015 blockbuster ‘Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation’, tearing through the tight streets of Rabat, Morocco. Being a Tom Cruise movie, it’s probably a contractual obligation to include a bike chase as well. And wouldn’t you know it, those too are supplied by BMW Motorrad.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout premiers July 27th.
