New hot Subaru wagon holds get us very excited, but the world may have to wait.
Ever since the Subaru Levorg made its entrance 2014, everyone pretty much saw it’s potential as a hot STI (Subaru Tecnica International) model should the Japanese automaker be inclined to explore that route.
It already has the general look, just minus the angier engine and STI bits badges strewn about. In fact, Subaru already showed off a rather complete Levorg STI Concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon late last year, and the production model should draw heavily from it given that the differences seem quite minor over the standard car.
Subaru seems to be lining up the launch of the Levorg STI in parallel to the 50th anniversary of their now-famous use of the horizontally-opposed boxer four cylinder engines. That being said, there’s no word yet on what the exact specifications will be for the new hot Levorg.
The Levorg STI Concept sported a 2.0-litre turbo flat-four, but it’s possible a larger 2.5-litre engine could be called up to power the production model, lifted from the current WRX STI. It should also - naturally - be given the full gamut of suspension and brake upgrades that Subaru has furnished the WRX STI with. All told, the Levorg STI could likely be a formidable fast tourer.
So far, all indications point to the Levorg STI being limited to sale in Japan. It’s anyone’s guess how long that restriction will last but we we’re not getting our hopes up too high about it showing up at a Subaru showroom in Australia anytime soon.
