Last week at an event in Los Angeles, Tesla revealed another addition to their all-electric range of cars. As I’m sure you would’ve seen, the utterly bonkers looking Cybertruck is turning car design on its head. Tesla opened the order books for US customers last week and now, it’s our turn.
That said, production for the Cybertruck is still way off, unfortunately. However, the brand is accepting US$100 (AU$150) pre-orders for initial deliveries slated to begin in 2021 for single and dual motor variants while the range-topping tri-motor version is slated for late 2022. Roughly 250,000 global pre-orders have been received according to news sources.
No Australian price tags have been announced for the truck but, as a guide, in the US it’ll start from US$39,900 (AU$58,900) for the rear-wheel drive single motor version and US$49,900 (AU$73,750) for the dual-motor all-wheel drive variant while the range-topper will start from US$69,900 (AU$103,300).
In terms of capability, the single-motor truck has a range of 400km and will sprint to 100km/h from standstill in around 6.5 seconds while the all-wheel drive mid-level variant with a range of 480 km performs the sprint in around 4.5 seconds. The Cybertruck is the first to feature Tesla’s new ‘Plaid’ powertrain that is able to use its tri-motor setup to extract a mind-boggling sprint time of 2.9 seconds. Exact power and torque numbers are yet to be disclosed.
Sadly, much of the Cybertruck isn’t known, apart from the details that was made known at the unveiling. We will be bringing you more updates on this frankly astonishing looking EV pickup truck as and when it comes. Stay tuned.
