It’s all about efficiency, baby.

Without making too much of a fuss, American EV carmaker Tesla has updated its flagship saloon & SUV, the Model S and Model X respectively, with the range-toppers of each model now offering more range than ever before. That’s down to a new motor that, paired to the same 100kWh battery we’re quite used to by now, can now do 10% more range.

The Tesla Model S used to do 540km with that battery, and now it’ll do 595km. The heftier Model X on the other hand now does 523km on a full charge, though the improvements to the motors in both models are identical. Tesla says that improved cooling, better lubrication & bearings, and revised gear designs have been incorporated into the new motor setup.

“Pairing a permanent magnet motor to the front wheels with an induction motor in the rear enables unparalleled range and performance at all times. The net effect is a more than 10% improvement in range, with efficiency improvements in both directions as energy flows out of the battery during acceleration and back into the battery through regenerative braking.” –

The new cars also benefit from compatibility with Tesla’s new V3 Superchargers, with 200kW fast-charging now an option. V2 Superchargers on the other hand can now juice up the luxury EVs at rates of up to 145kW. They’re also including Autopilot semi-autonomous driving as standard on the top-models, which is nice.

The company is also jumping on the bandwagon of more intelligent adaptive suspension, with the new system on Tesla’s largest cars able to adjust and readjust itself constantly (much like what we’ve already seen on other mass-market luxury vehicles), and even drop its height when driving at speed (which the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland has been doing since 2014, but who’s keeping score).

The 2019 Tesla Model S and Model X are already available to order for our market on the Tesla website.
