Remember the Toyota GR Supra GT4 Concept that was previewed at the Geneva Motor Show? At the time, the car seemed to be an exploration of where the Supra could be taken given a bent of at track-day loving motorsport enthusiast, except that it met FIA GT4 racing series regulations, making the decision to call it a ‘concept’ very odd indeed.
Four months into the future and the Japanese automaker has removed that portion of its moniker, leaving it to be called, plainly, the GR Supra GT4, for the consideration of the company's customer racing teams and due for a proper launch some time in 2020.
In light of its due date, Toyota along with its Gazoo Racing motorsports and performance division, have declined to provide any concrete details about the Supra GT4 except to state the obvious that the car is based on the road going A90.
Once it does reach a production stage, however, building it for its racing customers will fall into the purview of Toyota Motorsport GmbH, the German-based division that already fashions competition-ready versions other models for road and dirt racing.
From what we’ve already seen of the GT4-spec Supra, the car’s suspension has been swapped out for much more serious alternatives, its interior stripped of creature comforts, and a substantial aero package fitted.
Interestingly, though this might change fairly soon as more finalised details emerge of the finished car. On the concept, though, it was noted that the car kept what is essentially an untouched version of the A90’s powertrain and engine with the 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder producing 250kW and mated to an automatic transmission - which we assume to be the familiar ZF-8HP.
That said, Toyota has confirmed that the GT4 will feature an Akrapovic exhaust system, Pirelli race tyres, and a motorsport-grade fuel system for fast refuelling and endurance-level capacity. Additionally, its body will be reinforced with a high strength roll cage, Pirelli slicks, and feature a front diffuser and rear wing made of natural fibre composites.
