Toyota’s FT-86 II sports car concept is a definite starter for the Australian International Motor Show (Melbourne) in July.

Currently the Toyota FT-86 II is scheduled for Australian launch late 2012 or early 2013.

The rear-drive sports coupe, a joint development between Toyota and Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries, has been shown internationally as Toyota prepares a return to the sports car market where it has previously sold iconic vehicles like the Celica, MR2 and Supra. The Fuji (Subaru) connection is highlighted under the bonnet with the Toyota FT-86 II employing a horizontally-opposed Boxer engine – the compact powerplant enabling a low, aerodynamically efficient front-end design.

Drive is via a six-speed manual transmission and Toyota has used its Formula One Grand Prix experience to develop the aerodynamic package for the FT-86 II.

With an overall length of 4,235mm and a relatively long wheelbase of 2,570mm, drivers and passengers in the Toyota FT-86 II sit towards the rear – like all proper sports cars - for optimum weight distribution. The Toyota FT-86 II is 1,795mm wide and only 1,270mm high.

“FT-86 II pays homage to Toyota’s illustrious sports car history that includes cars such as the Supra, MR2 and 2000GT,” explained Toyota Australia’s senior executive director sales and marketing, David Buttner. “It heralds a compact, rear-drive production car with the style, performance and handling demanded by those who regard driving as a passion rather than a necessity.”
