Because there’s just no room for it anymore.
Toyota may be largely known as the purveyor of robust, reliable, but otherwise unimaginative goods, but the company does genuinely go out of its way to feed the enthusiasts among them. The Toyota 86 is a great example of that and so is this, the Toyota Mark X.
But with tightening emissions and Toyota’s steady move to develop all of its new models on its New Global Architecture (TNGA), there was just no room in the lineup to keep cars like the Mark X (which traces its lineage back to the late 1960s with the very first Mark II) in production. With a cult-like following and fans the world over, Toyota’s given its much-loved rear-drive saloon a send off with the Final Edition, bringing an end to the sporty naturally-aspirated sports saloon.
It’s essentially a specced-up version of the Mark X with things like a two-tone red/black leather upholstery, 18-inch alloys and unique bumpers on either end. There’s also kit like intelligent cruise control and rear cross traffic alert as standard.
As several other outlets have reported, the sun appears to be setting on the 4-door saloon, and the first to go are the ‘enthusiasts choices.’ For those who’ve driven one, the Mark X has always been a particularly sharp drive with its V6 engine and perfect weight balance, resulting in a decidedly old-school sense of driving satisfaction. The X will most certainly be missed.
