Here it is – the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series.
The best SLS AMG yet exploits the ‘AMG Lightweight Performance’ strategy and tips the scales at just 1550kgs. Part of that reduction comes from a switch to titanium for the exhaust system (that alone saves 13kgs).
As well, the bonnet, rear panel and torque tube are made from carbon-fibre.
Combine that with 464kW635Nm from the AMG 6.4-litre V8 engine and the result is zero to 100km/h in the neck-straining time of 3.5 seconds (that’s faster than a Lamborghini Gallardo!). For the Black Series, maximum engine speed is up from 7200rpm to 8000rpm and there’s revised mapping, air ducting and valve train mods too.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is the fifth Benz to wear the Black Series moniker. The first was the 2006 SLK55 AMG Black Series and since then, the name has become synonymous with the ultimate high-performance Mercedes vehicles.
Underneath is a wider track front and rear, the AMG Adaptive Performance Coil-Over Suspension and high-performance AMG ceramic brakes. There’s also the electronically controlled AMG differential lock and new AMG lightweight alloy wheels and unique tyres.
Styling is borrowed from the SLS AMG GT3 racer including flared fenders, side skirts and rear diffuser.
Not enough? Well you can opt for the AMG Aerodynamic package, including the GT3 rear wing, to keep things even more firmly glued.
Changes inside too – but not too racy with leather and Alcantara and a 1000-watt, 11-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.
File this one under ‘D’ for ‘desirable’.
