has stamped its claim to the ultimate hot hatchback with the launch of the Golf R.
Priced from $48,490, the Golf R replaces the R32 model as Golf’s performance king and is available in both three-door and five-door versions.. Unlike its V6-powered predecessor, the Golf R is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

The Golf R delivers 188kW/330Nm and drives all four wheels via Volkswagen’s latest 4MOTION system and either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG automatic. Volkswagen says the Golf R accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds, returns fuel consumption of 8.7l/100kms and C02 emissions of 197g/km.

Externally, the Golf R is distinguished by daytime running lights, standard Bi-Xenon headlights, LED taillights, twin exhausts and standard 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inch are optional).

Inside the specifications virtually mirror the Golf GTI except the seat trim is plain black (leather or Volkswagen Racing seats are optional) and the steering wheel is an ‘R’ version. There’s an eight-speaker audio system and the usual full compliment of safety features including seven airbags.

Golf R runs a ride height reduced by 25mm compared to standard Golfs and, like the new Golf GTD, it can be optioned with Adaptive Chassis Control with driver-select tuning characteristics.
