It had to happen – Volkswagen’s acclaimed Micobus from 1950 has re-emerged, this time with electric power in the form of the Bulli concept unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. The newcomer even has the two-tone paint and front ‘V’ of its iconic inspiration.
In fact the latest Bulli is a substantially re-crafted version of a concept first shown as a ‘Microbus’ in 2001. This time it’s fitted with an electric motor, six seats and 2011 iPad infotainment.
The Bulli’s electric motor provides 85kW/270Nm and Volkswagen says the mini people mover offers a range between recharges of 300 kilometres. Zero to 100km/h takes 11.5 seconds and the Bulli has a top speed of 140km/h.
Interestingly, Volkswagen admitted the Bulli chassis can accommodate internal combustion engines up to 1.4-litres – hinting that this concept car could be headed for production to introduce a fifth people mover line for the German giant – alongside Caravelle, Caddy and the excellent Touran and Sharan (the latter two not sold in Australia).
The Bulli is 3.99-metres long, 1.75-metres wide and 1.70-metres tall. With a 2.62-metre wheelbase and 1.5-metre front and rear tracks, it presents as wide and low compared to other people movers.
Inside – just like the original Microbus – is a flat floor and two bench seats (seating capacity is six people). And, also like the original, the seats fold flat to form a large bed.
Of course modern technology abounds with a removable iPad, Bluetooth, satellite navigation and a sound system from legendary American guitar manufacturer Fender.
