For Tiguan lovers who hate Tiguans.
Car companies are hot on the whole SUV thing right now, with more and more brands that never explored the space suddenly desperate to capitalise on the fever. Volkswagen is no exception, though when it comes to mid-sized family wagons, you’d be correct in thinking it already has an offering there in the Tiguan, and has done for some time.
In fact, the latest-generation model is even available in a longer, more cavernous 7-seat option specifically to capture as much marketshare as possible.
However, in China, it seems there’s a unique cache of people that want a Tiguan that isn’t a Tiguan, or at least isn’t instantly recognisable as one. They want more than a fancy trim line (like Ford’s Vignale), they want a car that’s mostly the same but also totally separate from the Tiguan in every aspect you can see and touch.
Enter the Tayron.
It’s set to make its debut at the Beijing Auto Show on the 25th of April, though photos have (predictably) found their way online, thanks to CarNewsChina. The portal also confirms that the Tayron is based on the Tiguan’s platform, though that’s not really a surprise either.
The Tayron caught in photos show a model that’s been designated as ‘380TSI,’ also confirming that the upcoming model will use a turbocharged petrol motor, with quarters claiming it’s a 2.0-litre turbo unit shared with the (also China-only) Teramont SUV, with an identical 175kW/350Nm output.
Aside from that, there are no further details surrounding the Tayron, though you can be sure that we’ll bring you updates from the cars’ launch very soon.
