Volvo has commenced production of its C30 Electric.

The good-looking, handily-sized electric Volvo C30 is a complicated build – first going down the regular assembly line in Ghent then transported to Gateborg for installation of the motor, battery and other electric drivetrain components.

Cleverly the electric Volvo C30 boasts the same luggage space as the conventional models thanks to installation of the batteries where the fuel tank normally resides.

The Volvo C30 Electric has a top speed of 130km/h and accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 10.9 seconds (that’s faster than many gasoline-fuelled, similarly-sized vehicles). Range between battery re-charges is about 150kms and re-charging (seven hours for a full re-charge)can be done at home with a conventional power socket.

Initially Volvo is leasing the C30 Electric to European governments and corporations – at home in Sweden and also in Belgium, Norway and The Netherlands.

Locally Volvo Car Australia has expressed interest in bringing the C30 Electric to market. Its full size, usual Volvo safety and efficient electric drivetrain would give it considerable appeal to customers seeking to go ‘green’ without compromising on space.
