Volvo teases their new generation of smaller 40 series vehicles for the first time.
The Swedish automaker has been enjoying a good run with their flagship 90 series of vehicles – S90, V90, XC90 – but ever since the first stirrings of those cars bubbled to the surface, people wondered when Volvo would unveil the new generation of the popular 40 series.
Through a sole teaser image along with two others (revealed on Snapchat, no less), we’re given a little more clarity on what Volvo has in store. More importantly, these little reveals show that they are hard at an answer to the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 crowd.
Dissecting the primary teaser image, even though we’re looking at it from the side, the new Volvo corporate face seems to have carried over untouched from the S90 along with the headlight design housing the ‘Mjolnir’ (Thor’s hammer) lamps.
It’s also possible that the new 40 series vehicles will feature a larger cabin while retaining the relatively compact dimensions by moving the wheels closer to the corners of the car, letting it have less overhang than before.
A further prodding by UK’s Autocar also revealed through a Volvo spokesperson that two concept cars will be revealed (in full?) next week. It is also confirmed that the company’s new CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform will underpin these new cars, one that has been co-developed by Volvo and its parent company Geely.
The first Snapchat image is accompanied with the caption “Not your daddy’s Volvo”, indicating that they make no bones about it being aimed at a younger audience. The second Snap’s caption is far less interesting but the picture itself shows what looks like the front bumper with a rather glossy air intake and a wheel with a significant amount of positive camber. Sports Volvo? Maybe a C40 hot hatch?
We wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Volvo will be using their current crop of turbocharged four-cylinder and/or hybrid engines in these new 40 series cars too – albeit tuned to produce less power.
