Cyan blue will be both on guard and on the grid.
The FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), which begins its season-opening race at the Paul Ricard Circuit between April 1st to 3rd, will be the debut of a new safety car: the Volvo V60 Polestar.
With the V60 Polestar, which is a cut above the common or garden V60 wagon, the very blue Volvo comes powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine that outputs a healthy 257kW and 500Nm of torque which is sent to all four wheel via a six-speed automatic transmission.
That’s all well and good, but to meet the strict standards set by FIA with pretty much everything, the V60 Polestar had to be fitted with some extra kit to ready it for safety car duty. The mandatory equipment includes a roll cage as well as a full array of rescue and communication equipment along with the roof-mounted emergency lights.
Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin, Polestar’s head of motorsport, said: “It was an easy decision to start a cooperation with the WTCC on the Official Safety Car. This allows us to close the circle from track to road by showcasing customers the take-home alternative of our racing car technology in the form of the Volvo V60 Polestar Safety Car, at the same time being part of the vital and extensive safety work of the championship.”
Last year Polestar Cyan Racing, representing the official Volvo factory motor racing team, renewed its commitment to the WTCC series and in 2016 season will be racing two all-new Volvo S60 Polestar TC1 with drivers Thed Björk, Robert Dahlgren and Fredrik Ekblom , cementing that relationship to the sport even further with their V60 Polestar being the new official safety car.
The WTCC season in 2016 will consist of 12 races held over four continents, beginning with the aforementioned Race of France at Paul Ricard this weekend.
