With the release of the newest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 12, the Cupertino-based tech company has rolled out a number of improvements to their smartphone-to-vehicle user interface, CarPlay.
One major feature add, aside from the performance improvements and extra capability, is the option to use third party mapping and navigation apps natively instead of their own Apple Maps. Other developers have already taken advantage of the more open stance the company has adopted, with notable social platforms such as WhatsApp also rolling out CarPlay support.
The vast majority of road users still prefer the more comprehensive experience of Google Maps and the community-driven insights that Waze provides, both experiences that are supported in Android Auto, unsurprisingly.
Google seemed to waste little time in updating their apps to include compatibility to enable this new feature, making both Google Maps and Waze are now both accessible within the Apple CarPlay experience. Right now, though, turn-by-turn navigation has yet to be implemented on Waze, meaning audio directions will only be provided within the app. Waze has confirmed the feature was coming soon.
