PROS

CONS

Did you know that emissions for the Prius are up to 90 per cent lower than any other car of its size?

The Toyota Prius is not only exceptional because it’s the number-one green car in Australia. It’s also because it ticks all of the other boxes. We’re talking great fuel economy, good looks, a spacious interior and a fantastic drive. And for those of you who are impressed by the star factor (Hollywood that is), the Prius comes up trumps with more celebrities choosing to get behind the wheel of this greener than green car than Paris Hilton has boyfriends. Think Leo DiCaprio, America Ferrera, Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts and yes, Miss Paris Hilton herself.

The Prius is of course a hybrid, and to bring you up to speed on the latest eco-auto lingo, this means it has a normal engine plus an electric one and automatically switches between the two to save on petrol. This is not only an obvious plus for the environment but also for your wallet with the Prius only using 4.4 litres of petrol to get you about 100km (about the same as a scooter). So this means that a full tank could get you up to 1000km!

2009 TOYOTA PRIUS

The Prius is sold with all the standards that you would expect, including power mirrors, power windows, a CD player, and for safety’s sake – dual front air-bags and anti-lock brakes. Other goodies include:

  • Push-button start
  • Power windows and mirrors
  • Electric power steering
  • 6-speaker stereo
  • 15-inch alloy wheels
  • CVT (continuously variable transmission – aka no gear changes)
  • Auto climate control air con
  • Remote central locking
  • Bluetooth (for your mobile phone)
  • Rear spoiler.

Priced a little on the higher side, the Toyota Prius is still well within reach retailing for $37,400. If you have money to burn, there is an upgraded version called the ‘Prius i-tech’ that’s priced at $46,900.
