Ford Performance Vehicles’ new Super Pursuit shows why utes are no longer just for tradies
If you think utes aren’t hot, think again; FPV has unveiled a three-model high performance ute lineup – based on the FG Falcon - to tackle similar fast-selling models from arch rivals HSV. The traditional ute market has changed forever and the reality is most FPV and HSV utes drivers don’t own a pair of workboots.
Slide behind the wheel of FPV’s latest range-topping Super Pursuit V8 ute, smell the beautiful leather seats and notice the alloy pedals…would you really throw some bags of cement in the back? No you wouldn’t and many Super Pursuit Ute owners work in white collar jobs.
The bulge on the bonnet of the Super Pursuit serves a purpose – underneath is Ford’s Boss 5.4-litre quad-cam 32-valve V8 engine that produces 315kW of power at 6500 rpm and peak torque of 551Nm between 1950 and 5200 rpm.
Two transmissions are available – a six-speed manual or (at no extra cost) a ZF six-speed automatic featuring Sequential Sports Shift.
Braking is handled by huge 355mm x 32mm front discs with Brembo six-piston calipers while the rear are 328mm x 26mm discs with a single red-finished caliper.
With dark or mid argent headlight accents, 19-inch wheels, rear wheel arch bulges, a hard tonneau and spoiler, sporty front grille, side striping and bonnet decals, subtlety isn’t the Super Pursuit’s desired strong point.
But there is no doubting the mucho appeal of the Super Pursuit and its FPV stable mates – much like North America, the high performance ‘pickup’ market is populated by vehicles that blokes want to own.
