Holden’s compact is a head-turner
Holden’s Barina sedan is often overlooked by the hatchback version which is a shame because the sedan is one stylishly good-looking 4-door compact.
The imported Barina lineup comprises a threedoor hatch, five-door hatch and the sedan.
All are powered by a spritely 1.6-litre engine and come comprehensively equipped with airconditioning, front and side airbags, power windows and power mirrors.
Entry to the Barina family is only $14,790 (3-door hatch, manual), the five-door hatch starts at $16,290 – the same price as the Sedan An automatic transmission will add $2,000 to those prices. A useful option pack is the !5” alloy wheels and ABS anti-lock brakes – this is priced at $1190.
The Barina should definitely be included on the shopping list of anyone considering a compact car as we’re certain Holden dealers throughout Australia will be keen to sharpen their pencils.
Currently in the sales race, Barina is overshadowed by the Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Getz, Mazda2 and Suzuki Swift. As detailed in the previous issue of Car Showroom, Honda has also recently launched the all-new Jazz into the segment. We consider the Jazz to be the standout compact car on the market but it does carry a price premium over the Barina…in a segment which is very dollar-driven.
So the Barina, while presenting some compelling credentials on paper, is fighting in one of the toughest market segments.
Clearly though, the national strength of Holden and its massive dealer network certainly score points in the ‘Buyer Confidence’ department.
Our suggestion would be to do your sums, drive each car on your list and then talk to the dealers – to get the best possible deal.
