Swedish brand Volvo goes further in shedding its conservative image with the launch of the 2009 S80 T6 all-wheel-drive. The new model joins the S80 V8 AWD and turbodiesel S80 D5 to provide Volvo an outstanding lineup of European sports sedans.

With 210 kW and 400 Nm of torque (developed from just 1500 rpm), the T6 engine replaces the previous 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine in the revised S80 range. The miniscule dimensions of the new turbo six result from very clever engineering work and enable Volvo accommodate this engine into the S80’s compact front-end.

Drive is to all four wheels via a six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. On the outside, 2009 model year S80s can be distinguished by a new design of 17-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the S80’s luxury interior gains some new colours, redesigned headrests, new walnut trim, tyre pressure-monitoring and an upgraded audio system as part of the 2009 model year changes. For youngsters, the optional Rear Seat Entertainment System (RSE) features larger 8-inch screens on the back of the front-seat head restraints.

An intriguing option is Volvo’s Clean Zone Interior Package (CZIP) which automatically ventilates the interior when the car is unlocked. It takes one minute to do the complete job and only operates if the exterior temperature is warmer than 10 degrees…might not see much action back in Sweden!

Suspension is independent by MacPherson struts and multilink rear end. Volvo’s FOUR-C Active Chassis, which is standard on T6 and V8 models, delivers adjustable suspension settings ‘comfort’; ‘sport’ and ‘advanced’. The system automatically adjusts in emergencies to provide maximum stability.

Volvo’s all-wheel drive system constantly balances the power bias between the front and rear wheels to ensure optimal roadholding in all situations. The latest version features Instant Traction, which favours the rear wheels when starting on slippery surfaces. Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) are standard.

The T6 is priced at $78,850 and sits in the middle of the S80 range. For diesel fans, the S80 D5 is priced at $78,950 while the high performance S80 V8 will set you back $98,950. In the marketplace, the S80 fights against some tough imported and local high performance sports sedans. Where it does score big points is for it’s high-tech driver aids and well-appointed luxury interior.
