Drove the Ranger, Amarok, Hilux and Navara.
Amarok was superior to all of them. 8 speed ZF auto is brilliant - absolutely brilliant, constant 4WD, superior road noise at low speed and freeway driving, excellent back seat space, excellent tray and smart tailgate design with easy closing, outstanding bi-xenon/HID headlights with LED signature. Very flexible. Most impressed and fuel economy has been outstanding. Bi-turbo 2 litre diesel is a gem, do not worry about it not being big enough.
Ranger was good inside and has equal tray to Amarok, awful steering, VERY loud 0-60km/h but equal to Amarok on freeway and back seat was excellent. Much better than the Hilux.
Hilux is just overrated. Mid pack at best. Disappointed overall in it and expected more from the supposed 'leader'. Back seat was a joke, wheel base like the Mitsi is to short and width between the wheel arches is disgraceful for such a 'wide' tray.
Navara was excellent is many areas and will sell well, was closest to Amarok.

The fuel consumption figures are not entirely true , if the speedos were correctly tuned I think you would get an entirely different figure . VW have their speedos wound up by nearly 10klm's so in actual fact when the speedos reading 100 you are only doing around 91/92 klm's. This in turn creates false fuel figures which makes the consumption look better. Currently I am averaging 9.5lt/100k's , driving the car on the speed limit . I have asked to have my speedometer re-calibrated but are told that it is within govt regulations so get used to it . Apparently car companies are allowed 10% variation on speedos. The only other issue I have with my Amarok is the head lights are truly disappointing , VW have checked them 3 times and told me they are fine , my wife's corolla has better headlights than this $60000 4x4 and that's a fact. The rest of the car is awesome and it is a great car , you feel safe driving on the highway or off road . Creature comforts in cab are easy to use and well set out. 8 spd gearbox is a gem and the engine has plenty of grunt , overtaking anything is a breeze . I would recommend this car to any family who wants some more room and want to go off road but , check the headlights are correct before taking ownership , VW not to flash at helping me with my headlight issue .

I did extensive research when i was in the market for a ute and ended up with an Amarok. They are great. No other ute comes near them, sure the Hilux has a good reputation but give the Amarok a couple of years and it will dominate the ute market. Simply the best ute you can buy at the moment!!!
Amarok-the best ute right now

The Volkswagen Amarok is simply the best ute you can buy at the moment. Its standerd featurs and options far surpass any other ute and have a look at the interier/exterier styling, its like a car. It doesn't look or feel like its meant to be thrashed like most other utes. Its a good quality ute!!! It has leather seats, 19 inch wheels(on the Ultimate model) and it's got one of the best engine's around. Don't be put of just because it only has a 2.0 litre engine. It has 120 kw and 400nm of torque and only drinks 7.9 l/100km. Simply unrivalled.
