This is my 3rd Passat TDI. I have also had the Audi A4 TDI and a petrol Merc E200 CD. When it comes to the later 2 You are stung on the luxury car tax here. The extra premium for the A4 is not worth it when you can pick up the VW for 10 grand less. Mines a work car, most months it's doing 2000 kms of highway driving. There's good acceleration for overtaking and this car sits well on 110 kms all day where roads permit. Fuel is great often getting 4.6 per 100 kms. It's a comfortable car to drive for long periods. When you compare against other marqs like Honda, ford, subaru, etc the VW has that German feel about it. All I can say is try one out, you will never go back to a ford or Honda once you have been bitten by the VW German feel. Great value for money with a good few extras. Only disappointment is sat nav is very hexy at 2500 + if fitted by dealer. At fuel prices well above 1.40 a litre the diesel option is a no brainer if your doing 20000 plus per annum
A quality car with great space

When I decided to get a wagon to allow more room for the family my first choice was an Audi A4. A quick visit to the dealer with the pram confirmed my worst nightmare - it didn't fit in the boot! While I could squeeze it in sideways, that basically meant the whole boot was gone which wasn't going to work.
Next step, the VW Passat. I'd heard mixed reviews but after test driving the car I couldn't fault it. While the transmission takes some getting used to, the build and ride quality is second to none. Space is also a huge plus. I can easily fit the pram in lengthwise with enough room for the rest of the luggage needed for a family trip, even the golf clubs.
I've only has the car for a couple of months but have no complaints. It has some real power for the size and the economy is great as well, depending on how you drive it....
I would highly recommend this car to anybody who would like a little extra room without sacrificing the ride or quality of their next car.
