Big German bruiser can now haul ass.
After months of blood, sweat, and tears (probably), the Volkswagen Amarok V6 has received its coveted 3.5-tonne tow rating, finally able to claim the title as the most capable ute in the segment for hauling everything from boats to caravans to the average family home. The Amarok V6 is a ute that we’ve come to adore, with its amazing breadth of ability hampered only by its limited safety spec, though for many, that’s something that’s easily overlooked.
The Amarok V6’s wonderful 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 hasn’t been fettled with, so that smooth-revving engine continues to put out a healthy 165kW/550Nm (and carry a TDI550 badge with pride). Improvements were made by Volkswagen engineers to various aspects of the Amarok to achieve the rating, including revising the ute’s rear step set-up. As such, all 2018 Amarok V6s will come with a genuine 3.5 tonne-rated towbar, too.
Talking about this achievement, VW’s commercial division boss Nick Reid could barely contain his pride:

With V6 variants racking up almost three-quarters of all sales, the update to the Amarok’s tow rating will certainly be happy news for those who had the Amarok V6 in mind. The lineup remains unchanged though, with prices starting at $55,490 for the Amarok V6 TDI550 Sportline, stepping up to $59,990 for the Highline, and $67,990 for the Ultimate (all costs exclude on-road charges).
