Celebrating 70-years of the Kombi.
A big milestone should never go unmarked, and Volkswagen has just the thing for Australians to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the iconic Kombi van, the van most synonymous with the flower-power movement of the 1960s (when it was already nearing 20). The Multivan Kombi 70, as the commemorative edition is called, is built off the Multivan TDI340 Comfortline, though it adds a variety of cool #throwback touches to evoke the spirit of the original Kombi.
Only 120 units will be built, and all of them will feature a DSG double-clutch auto.
Over the standard Multivan TDI340 Comfortline, the Kombi 70 adds things like exclusive two-tone paint, and the retro-mod 18-inch ‘Disc’ alloys. Further, the floor inside gets a unique ‘wood effect’ treatment, while the seats are wrapped in a leather/Alcantara combination. And because this is a Kombi at heart, the ‘Good Night’ package is also thrown on for good measure, which includes things like a ‘Multiflex’ bed extension with washable cover, three drawers beneath the rearmost seats, as well as a rechargeable flashlight (how the flashlight constitutes a ‘Good Night’ we’re not sure, unless scary stories and dramatic under-face lighting are involved).
Topping off the package are the inclusion of LED headlights (with LED daytime running lights) as well as electrically-operated sliding rear doors, so that you’ll never have to strain yourself getting in and out of your Multivan Kombi.
The 2018 Volkswagen Multivan Kombi 70 will be available “early March,” with prices pinned at $64,990 drive-away. If Volkswagen’s take on a camper is a bit too yesteryear for your liking, perhaps the slightly-dearer Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo ACTIVITY will be more your bag. Whichever way you go though, you’ll be safe in the knowledge that you look that much more cool than the guy in the trailer.
