But greener and leaner, too.

2018 Volkswagen Amarok V6 Ultimate

Volkswagen’s local office has announced that the Amarok V6 ute is set for an engine update later this year, with the much-loved 3.0-litre V6 to be swapped out for a similarly-sized unit, but packing significantly more punch than the outgoing car. Further, the new mill will also be Euro-6 compliant and more efficient than the soon-to-be-discontinued engine, so it’s good news all around.

“As we’ve promised before, we have no intention of giving up the mantle of the most powerful ute in its class, and are looking to offer the upgraded 190kW Amarok V6 later this year. Amarok continues to be a huge success story for Volkswagen in Australia, with fans won from Birdsville to boardrooms alike.” — Carlos Santos, Director, Volkswagen Group Australia

When it lands in September, the new V6 will put out an impressive 190kW/580Nm, making it 30Nm gruntier than the V6 in the Mercedes-Benz X350d (190kW/550Nm), and even more powerful than the mill in the new Ford Ranger Raptor (157kW/500Nm, though that’s just a 2.0-litre 4-pot, albeit with two turbos).

The torquey V6 will arrive first in the Volkswagen Amarok V6 Ultimate, before then being fitted to the Highline Black Edition. This means that those lusting after a more powerful Amarok will have to pay dearly for the luxury, though we’ve little doubt that the Amarok will justify its price in more way than one.
