A $7000 price difference is hard to swallow, though.
Those of you who may have been keen on a powerful, stately Volkswagen saloon will have to take note, as a range simplification exercise has seen the German marque’s local office kill off the sporty Passat 206TSI R-Line. The Passat 206TSI was held in high regard in the CarShowroom office, with its understated looks and punchy powertrain. However, slow sales and proximity to the more-desirable Arteon 206TSI meant that the way of the dodo was the only way for it to go.
And it’s not just in our market, either. Even in Germany, the Passat 206TSI has been killed off to give the Arteon more breathing room. However, if the saloon bodystyle isn’t a dealmaker for you, you can still get a Passat 206TSI estate, though there’s a $2000 premium to be paid for that.
Speaking to our friends at CarAdvice, PR & brand experience manager Kurt McGuiness had this to say:
“The 206TSI Passat sedan has ceased production to reduce model complexity, given the arrival of the Arteon 206TSI.” — Kurt McGuinness, Manager (PR & Brand Experience), Volkswagen Australia
The Arteon 206TSI is a car we like quite a bit. It looks good, drives well, and is surprisingly practical despite what that dramatic roofline might suggest. However, the price difference between the recently-deceased 206TSI Passat and the similarly-powered Arteon sits at a steep $7000. Whoever said style came cheap?
