The Australian lineup for the Volkswagen Amarok V6 has added a new variant in the form of the Sportline, a new variant for the V6, dropping the entry price into the muscular engine range to $55,490 (before ORCs). This represents a $4500 reduction over the previous entry point into a Amarok V6, the Highline, which came in at $59,990.
The Sportline now lines up favourably against other big-power utes, with the TDI550 V6 doing battle with cars like the Ford Ranger XLT and the Toyota Hilux SR5. The Amarok V6 Sportline also undercuts its rivals, with their prices up by $200 and $1900 when specified with similar powertrain and body styles.
The Amarok V6 sees power from a 3.0-litre turbodiesel, that produces 165kW and 550Nm (with up to 180kW available on overboost), putting power down to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox (though Volkswagen has confirmed that a six-speed manual Sportline will debut in 2018). Fuel consumption is rated at 9.0L/100km. It’ll do the century sprint in a sprightly 7.9-seconds too, enough to leave most people in the dust.
The Sportline comes packed with kit, with things like all-round disc brakes, 18-inch ‘Manus’ alloys, parking sensors front and rear, a mechanical diff lock, rear-view camera, 6.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display with smartphone mirroring, dual-zone climate control, and tinted rear windows. Unfortunately, kit remains the same and omits rear curtain airbags, the only ute in this segment to do so, though it’ll continue to be a firm favourite to tradies who love the big tub that can carry a full-size Australian pallet.
